Some of the trees were covered in volcanic ash before they were able to decompose.  The ground water dissolved the silica in the ash and carried it through the logs.  This solution is what caused the wood to mineralize and turn to stone over time.  The rainbow of  colours are due to varying iron content in the ash during this process.
